A building safety circuit should not be selected only by cable size. The cable route, fire risk, smoke control demand, and circuit function all matter. A fire rated power cable is normally used for circuits that must keep working during a fire test period. Emergency lighting, fire pumps, smoke exhaust fans, and alarm power circuits are common examples. A heat resistant power cable is different. It is used where the cable stays near heat during normal work, such as ovens, heaters, power rooms, and process equipment.
The first step is to check the circuit role. If the circuit must supply fire equipment, fire resistance should be reviewed. Reference cable data includes IEC 60331 at 750 C for at least 90 minutes and UL 2196 at 950 C for at least 180 minutes. If the main concern is dense smoke in a public area, low-smoke halogen-free material should be considered. IEC 61034 and IEC 60754 references are often used to discuss smoke and acid gas behavior.
Temperature is another point. Some heat-resistant cable structures are listed with long-term operation up to 150 C and short-term temperature up to 180 C. This does not mean every cable can be used in direct flame. It means the insulation and sheath should be matched to the working heat around the line.
